About the gallery

The château d'Eau is an historic institution in favour of photography, the first gallery in France especially devoted to photography. It was founded in 1974 by Jean Dieuzaide.

Temporary exhibitions
Since 1974, the gallery has presented more than 400 exhibitions, gathering the most famous worldwide photographers but also young artists.

The library
A very complete library from ancient to contemporary photography, which has now 10000 titles including video tapes, CD-ROM and a lot of photography magazines.

The collection
A permanent collection of 4700 prints, built during 30 years and traveling exhibitions in France and abroad.

The publications
300 monographs, posters and books have been published and constitute an important collection.

A FEW IMPORTANT DATES


In 1822, Nicephore NIEPCE invents photography. The same year, the Château d'Eau was built. It stays in office like water-tower until 1870.

1892 : Toulouse is the first town to offer university courses under Professor Charles FABRE, the autor of the first encyclopedia of photography.

1955 - 1971 : First great Brassaï's exhibition [1955], followed by numerous others under the watchful eye of the (Cercle des XII)

1974 : The mayor, Pierre Baudis inaugurates the first Municipal Photography gallery in France and entrusts it to Jean Dieuzaide, its founder-director. Attending the opening are Robert DOISNEAU, Jeanloup SIEFF, Jean-Claude GAUTRAND...)

1982 : Opening of the library.

1984 : Opening of a second gallery.

1989 : Inauguration of the third exhibit gallery

L'ASSOCIATION PACE

The city council of Toulouse gave in 1986 the gallery leadership to a non-profit association (under 1901 law)  : P.A.C.E "Photographie Au Château d’Eau". The current president is Miss France CAYLA
